Every few weeks someone asks us whether the silver on a barfi is permissible to eat. It is a fair question and it usually gets a vague answer, so here is a clear one, along with the part that actually matters and that almost nobody asks about.

## The short answer

Scholars who have addressed edible silver and gold leaf directly have generally held that consuming it is permissible. Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah has ruled that where gold and silver have been manufactured into an edible form and used to embellish food, there is no legal prohibition on consuming them. Islamweb, answering specifically about vark on sweets, reached the same conclusion, with the caveat below.

The caveat is *israf* — extravagance. The permission is for the leaf itself, not for using it as a display of wealth. A sheet on a tray of mithai at a wedding is one thing; gilding for the sake of showing that you can is the thing the caveat is about.

## The confusion this question usually comes from

There is a well-known and clearly established prohibition on eating and drinking **from vessels** made of gold or silver. It is reported in the sound collections and there is broad scholarly agreement on it.

That ruling is about plates and cups. It is a different question from whether a microscopically thin sheet of silver on a sweet may be eaten, and the scholars above treat them separately. People who have heard the first ruling and not the second often assume vark is covered by it. It is not the same matter.

## The part that actually matters

Here is what we would ask about if we were buying rather than selling.

**Vark was traditionally beaten between animal material.** For centuries, the way you got silver thin enough was to interleave it with ox gut or leather membrane and beat it for hours. The membrane is not part of the finished leaf, but the leaf is beaten in direct, prolonged contact with it — and the animal it came from was not slaughtered under any dietary rule.

That is the real question for a Muslim customer, and it is the same question a Jain or vegetarian customer asks. It is not about the silver. It is about what the silver was beaten against.

**Modern vark is not made that way.** Ours is machine-beaten between polyester film in a dust-free room. No animal material is involved at any stage. That is also why we describe it as 100% vegetarian — one manufacturing change answers both questions at once.

If you buy vark from anyone, this is the thing to ask them: *what is your leaf beaten between?* A supplier who cannot answer plainly is telling you something.

## The other thing to check

The genuine harm in this market is not silver. It is **aluminium sold as silver**. Adulterated leaf is cheaper, and it is not something anyone should be eating regardless of dietary law.

There are two field tests. Rub a sheet between your fingers: real silver disappears into a tiny ball, aluminium crumbles and leaves grey marks. Or burn a sheet — silver leaves a bright bead, aluminium leaves a dark ash. Both take seconds and both are worth doing on a new supplier's sample.

Buyers ask us for this often enough — usually the accountant rather than the buyer — that it is worth setting down plainly. This is the classification we use on our own invoices and the reasoning behind it. It is not tax advice, and the last section explains why you should still put it to your own CA.

## The codes

**Silver leaf (vark, chandi ka varak):** HSN **7106**, GST **3%**.

Chapter 71 covers precious metals. Heading 7106 is silver, unwrought or in semi-manufactured forms, or in powder form. Beaten leaf is a semi-manufactured form of silver, and silver chura and dust fall under the same heading as powder.

**Gold leaf (sona ka varak):** HSN **7108**, GST **3%**.

The same structure applies one heading along: gold, unwrought or in semi-manufactured forms, or in powder form.

At 3%, both sit at the precious-metals rate rather than at any food rate.

## Why not a food code

This is the part people get stuck on, and it is a reasonable place to get stuck. Vark is sold to be eaten, so Chapter 21 — miscellaneous edible preparations — looks like it ought to apply.

The classification follows what the goods **are**, not what they are for. Vark is silver that has been beaten thinner. It has not been compounded with anything, no other ingredient has been added, and it is not a preparation in the sense Chapter 21 uses. It leaves our premises as silver in a semi-manufactured form, which is what heading 7106 describes.

A coated product is a different matter. Silver-coated elaichi is cardamom with silver on it, and the cardamom governs — that is a food classification, not 7106. The line falls at the point where the silver stops being the whole of the goods.

## On an invoice

For a straightforward supply of silver leaf, an invoice would carry the description, HSN 7106, quantity, taxable value, and CGST plus SGST at 1.5% each within the state or IGST at 3% inter-state. Gold leaf the same, at 7108.

Since precious metals move with bullion, our own invoices state the rate the price was struck at. That is not a GST requirement. It is so that a buyer comparing two invoices three months apart can see why they differ.

## Take this to your CA anyway

Two honest caveats.

Classification is decided on the facts of the specific goods, and yours may not be identical to ours — a coated, compounded or blended product can land somewhere else entirely, as the elaichi example shows. And rates and notifications change; anything you read on a supplier's website has a date on it whether or not it is printed.

Silver-coated elaichi — *chandi wali elaichi* — is the green cardamom, wrapped in silver leaf, that arrives at the end of a meal or in a bowl at a wedding. It is one of the largest single uses of edible silver in India, and most people who eat it have never thought about where the silver comes from.

## What is actually on the cardamom

Nothing but silver. A sheet of vark, the same 999 fine leaf that goes onto barfi, applied to a whole green cardamom pod until the surface is covered.

The leaf is roughly 0.2 microns thick — about a five-thousandth of a millimetre. A kilogram of coated elaichi carries only a few grams of silver, which is why the coating adds far less to the price than people assume. What it adds is the look, and in the mukhwas trade the look is most of the product.

The cardamom underneath is unchanged. Silver has no taste and no smell, so a coated pod still opens with the same aroma as an uncoated one. If a coated elaichi tastes of nothing, the cardamom was poor before it was coated.

## How the coating is done

By hand, mostly. The pods are tumbled or rolled with loose leaf, or sheets are pressed on and the excess broken away — the technique varies by maker and none of it is machinery you could buy off a shelf.

Coating consumes a great deal of broken leaf, which is why makers buy **chura** — loose silver flakes, the offcut from cutting vark to size — rather than whole sheets. Whole sheets are cut for mithai, where an unbroken surface matters. For a curved pod, flakes are both cheaper and easier to work with.

## The vegetarian question, which is about the vark

Coated elaichi is often served at Jain and Hindu functions where dietary rules are strict, so this comes up.

The cardamom is not the issue. The silver is not the issue either — it is a metal. The issue is **how the silver was beaten**, because vark was traditionally beaten between ox gut or leather membrane, and some still is.

Machine-beaten leaf is interleaved with polyester film and touches no animal material at any stage. If you are buying coated elaichi for a function where this matters, the question to put to your supplier is not about the elaichi. It is: *whose vark is on it, and what was it beaten between?*

Most sellers of coated mukhwas buy their leaf in and will not know. That is worth knowing before you order for a wedding.
